We are a music band. We have just made our first CD with all our own written songs. So that shouldn’t be a problem from a copyright perspective… However, if we post a video on TikTok, with our own music in it, the sound is muted due to copyright. How do I solve this? I mean How can I solve copyright problem with own written music in video on TikTok?

Hi Jurgen. It’s great that you’ve created your own music! If you’re facing issues with copyright on TikTok for your own original music, there are a few steps you can take to address the problem:

      TikTok Copyright Dispute:

      1. Go to the TikTok app.
      2. Find the video with the muted sound.
      3. Tap on the three dots (ellipsis) to access the menu.
      4. Look for an option like “Report” or “Report a problem.”
      5. Select “Copyright” or a similar option.
      6. Explain in the provided text box that the music is your own original work, and you hold the copyright.

      Use TikTok’s Original Sound Feature:

      • When uploading a video, use TikTok’s “Original Sound” feature.
      • This feature lets you use your own original music without potential copyright issues.
      • Tap on the “+” to create a new video, and when selecting the sound, choose “Original Sound” and then select your own music.

      Verify Your Account:

Consider verifying your TikTok account. Verified accounts may have better access to support, and it adds credibility to your ownership claims.

      Copyright Documentation:

If you have copyright documentation for your music, keep it handy. It could be useful if you need to provide evidence of ownership during a dispute.

      Contact TikTok Support:

      • Reach out to TikTok support directly. You can usually find a support or help center within the app.
      • Explain your situation and provide any relevant information, such as copyright documentation or details about the creation of the music.

      Explore Licensing Options:

TikTok may have automated systems for detecting copyrighted material. If your original music is being mistaken for something else, you might explore licensing options to formally register your music.

Remember, TikTok, like other platforms, relies on automated systems to identify and manage copyrighted content. These systems are not perfect and can sometimes make mistakes. By reaching out to TikTok support and following the platform’s dispute process, you increase your chances of resolving the issue and being able to share your original music without restrictions.
